Meeting with the Commissioner for Citizens: Supporting Civil Society

In a constructive meeting with Panagiotis Palate, the Commissioner for Citizens, representatives from Civil Society Advocates (CSA) and Emina Nuredinoska from the European Centre for Non-Profit Law (ECNL) discussed ways to strengthen civil society and enhance dialogue between Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and the Ministry of Interior.

The discussion focused on fostering closer cooperation to build trust and support the ongoing process of amending relevant legislation. This initiative aims to create a stronger, more collaborative relationship between the government and civil society, ensuring that the voices of NGOs are heard and their needs addressed.

Held under the framework of the Dialogue, Consultation, Empowerment – Protecting and Empowering Civil Society in Cyprus project, the meeting provided an opportunity to inform the Commissioner about the project’s activities and its mission to empower NGOs.

About the BUILD Programme

This initiative is supported by the Building a Robust and Democratic Civic Space (BUILD) programme, which aims to protect and promote EU fundamental rights and values. With a total grant of €2.9 million, the programme is co-funded by the European Union through the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) programme, the Bodossaki Foundation, and the NGO Support Centre in Cyprus.

Coordinated by the Bodossaki Foundation in Greece, in partnership with the NGO Support Centre in Cyprus, BUILD strengthens the capacities and sustainability of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in both countries.

A Path Forward

This meeting represents an important step in fostering collaboration and transparency between government bodies and civil society. By strengthening these partnerships, we can work toward a more inclusive and democratic future for Cyprus.
