Roundtable Discussion & Training for CSOs

Civil Society Advocates organizes a roundtable discussion and a training as part of the “For Stronger CSOs: Advocacy and capacity building for the empowerment of CSOs” project.
The events take place in collaboration with international experts representing the European Center for Not-For-Profit Law (ECNL) and the Philanthropy Europe Association (Philea).
A. Roundtable Discussion “Creating an Enabling Environment for Civil Society Organisations in Cyprus” | 09:00 – 11:00
The aim of the discussion is to explore what consists of an enabling environment for Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and come-up with specific recommendations for the public authorities.
- Luben Panov, Senior Program Advisor, European Center for Not-For-Profit Law (ECNL) and Hanna Surmatz, Head of Policy, Philanthropy Europe Association (Philea) will present the international standards regarding good governance of Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs).
- Dr Anastasia Michaelidou Kamenou, First Administrative Officer, Directorate of Associations, Fundraising and Media, Ministry of Interior will present the monitoring process the Ministry of Interior applies for the NPO sector.
- Eleni Karaoli, President, Civil Society Advocates will present key findings from the research conducted as part of the “For Stronger CSOs” project, as well as specific recommendations for creating an enabling environment for CSOs in Cyprus.

B. Capacity-building training: How to ensure AML/CFT measures do not hinder legitimate NPO activity | 11:30 – 13:30
The training will focus on the review of the risk assessment tools used in Cyprus, as well as the review of other restrictive measures implemented in relation to the Financial Action Task Force (FAFT) recommendations. Participants will explore and analyze specific recommendations and strategies for responding to the measures and practices implemented.

Both events will be in English.
Light lunch will be provided.
